Wow- it was widely assumed that the Dodgers were just gonna let him go and get a compensation pick next year. This is apparently a bargain price for him.
The Dodgers shocked the baseball skeptics Monday night, signing first-round Draft pick Zach Lee to a five-year, $5.25 million deal before the 9 p.m. PT deadline.
Lee, a two-sport star from McKinney (Texas) High School, had been in football practice with Louisana State University as an incoming freshman quarterback. He was taken by the Dodgers as the 28th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. Lee dropped because of signability issues, having let it be known he was seeking a signing bonus of $5 million.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Lee, a right-handed starter, was hardly considered a perfect fit for a franchise that supposedly has its eye on finances. Yet club officials had contended since Draft day that a serious effort would be made to sign him.
