The Los Angeles Dodgers promoted their top prospect, Yasiel Puig, following Sunday's 7-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Puig is expected to be in Los Angeles on Monday and likely will be the everyday center fielder while Matt Kemp is on the disabled list with a mildly strained right hamstring. Puig, 22, was batting .313 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs at Double-A Chattanooga. The Cuban defector, who signed a $42 million contract a year ago, was a sensation in spring training, batting .517 and prompting comparisons to Bo Jackson because of his size and speed.

The Dodgers optioned pitcher Matt Magill, who allowed nine walks and four home runs Sunday, to Triple-A Albuquerque.

In addition to the Kemp injury, the Dodgers also are without left fielder Carl Crawford, who has missed the past two games with a sore hamstring.

The Dodgers had hoped Puig could spend more time in the minor leagues refining his game and maturing. In spring training, manager Don Mattingly compared him to a "wild horse," and said he needed more time to polish his overall game. Puig was arrested in Chattanooga in late April on reckless driving charges for allegedly driving 97 mph in a 50-mph zone.

Puig is 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds with good speed and a strong right arm.

The Dodgers, who entered the season with a National League-record $217 million payroll, are in last place with a 23-32 record, 8 games behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks.

I'm excited about Puig- good debut- 2 for 4, and of course that canon throw double up the runner to end the game. Wow!

Yeah that throw was impressive for sure Dave. His speed also impressed me as well, with him being a such a big guy. He also brings some excitement to what's been an early disappointing season so far, lol.

Great to see you here Mamba & Def! Hahah Cuban Missile I like that. Puig kind of remind me of Raul Mondesi- a 5 tool player. Hopefully he surpasses Raul, so far so good. Another home run by him tonight (on a curveball) and we were able to pull it in in extra innings.

Puig has been exactly what the the Dodgers needed. With Kemp out and Ethier not producing much, a spark was needed, and Yasiel has been dynamite.

Puig named player of the week

By Mark Saxon

LOS ANGELES Considering Yasiel Puig did something no Los Angeles Dodgers rookie had done in more than 100 years, it's not surprising that he was named the National League's player of the week Monday.

Puig became the first Dodger since 1900 to have 13 hits in his first seven games. Puig, 22, batted .464 with four home runs and 10 RBIs after being recalled from Double-A Chattanooga last Monday. He had multi-hit games in five of the seven games.

Puig also made two spectacular throws from right field to throw out base runners, one of them ending a game.

Puig is the first rookie to win for his debut week since Baltimore's Manny Machado last August. He's the first Dodgers rookie to win one since Andre Ethier in July 2006.

Puig batted .516 in spring training.

That throw he had to 3rd was impressive. His plate coverage kind of reminds me a little bit of Vlad Guerrero.

3 more hits tonight by Yasiel Puig in a wasted effort thanks to Brandon League. I'm not so sure about him hitting cleanup though- what do you guys think- should he lead off or bit 3rd/4th/5th?

I kind of like him that lead off spot if all our players were healthy that is, and sliding Crawford to the #2 spot. Since he's on fire right now, not a bad idea to have him provide some type of protection to Adrian.
